Bill Nye traded in his traditional lab coat for a blue blazer in this year’s New York Fashion Week.
2020 New York Fashion Week hosted the Fourth Annual Blue Jacket Fashion Show—a show dedicated to raising awareness about prostate cancer. You won’t find any of your usual models in this show. Instead, top designers ask celebrities ranging from professional athletes to TV personalities (or in this case, a scientist) to model their version of the blue jacket. All funds go to finding a cure for prostate cancer—the most common non-skin cancer in America. One out of every nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States alone.
It’s Personal
If the last time you saw Bill Nye was in your fourth-grade science class, then Nye walking the runway was probably the one thing you never knew you needed. Thanks to a TikTok video gone viral on Twitter, the world was able to watch Nye in all his glory. Recently, the scientist has been keeping busy working with NASA to promote exploration to Mars, so what made Nye decide to step away from his scientific duties and fly out to New York? The scientist has been an advocate for prostate cancer ever since his father was diagnosed. Researchers are now able to test for the prostate hormone, which leaves Nye to believe they are close to finding an answer. He believes in the cause and is more than happy to support it in any way (yes, even as a model!) he can.
Not His First Time
Nye strutted the runway to Lizzo’s “Juice,” wearing a blue floral blazer complemented by one of his signature bow ties (he owns nearly five hundred). If it appeared Nye was more than comfortable walking the runway, that’s because he is a NYFW veteran. The scientist has a total of three NYFW appearances under his belt—two in The Blue Jacket Fashion Show.
The Designer
The designer behind this iconic moment was none other than Nick Graham. Graham is the designer credited with Nye’s first debut as a runway model; Nye walked in Graham’s NYFW Men’s Show back in 2017. It is only fitting the two teamed up for Nye’s return to the catwalk three years later. In fact, Nye has only ever walked NYFW in Nick Graham’s designs. It seems even a scientist can have a preference about his clothes.
The only thing missing from this iconic look? The crowd chanting his name as he showed off his killer dance moves.
“Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!”
