Who are your fashion icons? Our social media feeds are flooded with fashion influencers and celebrities showing off the latest trends. One of the latest trends has nothing to do with clothing at all, but rather who is wearing it. Pet fashion is on the rise, and so are its stars. Thanks to TikTok, some pets have been launched into fame—amassing millions of followers for their show stopping looks.
Dressing up pets in clothes has been around for a long time, but the commercial pet
fashion market we see today really started in the 2000s. One socialite who stands out was Paris
Hilton’s chihuahua, Tinkerbell. An array of bedazzled collars, hot pink sweaters, dressed, and
themed outfits made up her dog’s closet. Tinkerbell was constantly at Paris’s side in both
paparazzi pictures, red carpets, and interviews, acting as a fashion accessory and fashion icon all at once. In one instance, Tinkerbell was photographed courtside of a basketball game, wearing a Lakers jersey accessorized with a hot pink collar. Paris Hilton became so known for dressing up her dogs that in 2016 she unveiled a new dog clothing line, with all sorts of canine couture.
Aside from a clothing line, something else that we get to thank Tinkerbell for was the
inspiration for the 2008 movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Chloe, the protagonist, is the real
fashion icon of the 2000s. Her looks were probably more expensive than the wardrobe for the
rest of the cast. Chloe wore gowns, berets, pill box hats and jackets, wedding dresses, bathing
suits, booties, sunglasses, and a diamond studded collar. This little chihuahua pulled off more
iconic looks than almost any other iconic movie or celebrity at the time.
But today, TikTok stars rule the world of pet fashion. Tika the Iggy is an Italian
greyhound who went viral for her extravagant looks and lovable personality. What started out as
a funny viral video of a dressed-up dog with a voiceover, is now a celebrity. One scroll through
Tika’s Instagram feed erases any doubt of this dog being an actual model. The Italian greyhound
has even graced the occasional magazine cover. Again, somehow dogs are able to pull of looks
better than any human ever could. Tika’s outfits are almost indescribable. They are extravagant,
elegant, dramatic, and fit for a diva. Not only has Tika the Iggy been noticed by a multitude of
celebrities, she was even spotted at New York Fashion Week. Tika the Iggy is also a proclaimed
Gay Icon, and her dads Thomas and Louis Shapiro make sure to dress her in full rainbow couture
for Pride Month.
Another four-legged star taking over the fashion world is Rover the Cat, the “Runway
MEOWdel.” Rover has an award-winning catwalk that pairs “purrrfectly” with his lavish looks.
His signature is to wear some sort of cape, but he has also been seen wearing brightly-colored
boas, chains, and sunglasses. One of his most compelling outfits was a long cape made entirely
from fake mice, which totally screamed “Lady Gaga meat dress.”
If you have felt inspired by these fashion icons and are wishing to give your pet’s
wardrobe a little boost, a couple of brands to look at are: The Foggy Dog, Fetch & Follow, and Max-Bone. These brands will certainly help your pet look and feel the best with cute bandanas, sweaters, collars, t-shirts and more!
