NYFW: Marc Jacobs

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

Watching the Marc Jacobs New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 runway show, was like experiencing the most glamorous fever dream imaginable. Models were dressed mainly in muted tones and donned styles that were nostalgic yet somehow indistinguishable. It truly felt like a parallel universe in which everything seems familiar, yet simultaneously foreign and slightly off.

The show itself was a dynamic, lyrical performance that featured models of all backgrounds and sizes effortlessly dancing together in a way that seemed to emulate the rat race of daily life that we all are subjected to. As I watched the show, I felt as if I was intruding upon the daily activities of a small town, as models bustled around the runway. This normalcy, however, was contrasted by the overwhelmingly mysterious and eerie ambiance that was created by the models' unwavering eye contact and the unsettling music.

The collection as a whole presented a fresh, twisted take on both past and present fashion. In my opinion, both the collection and the show served as a window into the future of fashion by providing a completely different perspective on mundane life. For example, the show questioned societal gender norms by showcasing gender-ambiguous work ware pieces such as femininely structured suits.

The show, furthermore, carried an element of innocence and nostalgia by featuring looks that were reminiscent of school uniforms. These ensembles used a combination of plaid, tights, and collars to convey this sentiment.

All in all, the show was a lively representation of fashion in motion and provided a brand new take on classic trends giving consumers a lot to look forward to from Marc Jacobs in the fall.
