Even for those who absolutely love fashion, dressing up, and following the latest trends,
putting together an outfit can sometimes feel like an impossible task. Do you ever look into your
closet, get too tired to put in the effort, and end up grabbing the same old easy option? Hoodie
and leggings, anyone?
People who have their lives together might tell you to lay out your clothes the night
before, a.k.a. the meal prep of fashion. But as tired, overwhelmed, and stressed students and
workers, instead of thinking about tomorrow we are finishing up our assignments before 11:59
PM or crashing into bed. We are tired 24/7 and sometimes looking good can feel like a chore.
Well, if you also feel this way, then this is for you. As an always-tired college student writing for
a fashion blog who definitely struggles with the closet in the morning, I present to you the
ultimate guide for low-effort looks that will make you look like you actually have your life
together!
Jewelry
Jewelry can dress up any outfit. Some hoops and an updo can turn sweatpants into
athleisure. A cute choker or necklace can take away the attention from any sweatshirt or hoodie
and turn your outfit into a look. Some rings on your fingers can signify to people that you
actually planned what you were going to wear today.
Bonus tip: Buy in stacks! Multi-layered necklaces that are secretly just one necklace are
an easy way to up your jewelry game without making any effort there either. Same goes
for earrings or rings—maybe opt for the ones sold in sets next time to alleviate any stress
from trying to coordinate.
Neutrals are your friend
Grays, browns, blacks, whites. The neutral gang is here. Bright colors, even though they
are so much fun, may not be built for your day-to-day life. They take a fair bit of coordination to
pull together, something you might not have the energy for while you rush to work or class in the
morning. Neutrals are an easy solution to this problem because they tend to throw together easily because of how well the colors balance each other out. You can literally have an outfit with
every single one of these colors in it and still look good.
Hues, Tints, and Tones
In the same vein as the previous piece of advice, monochromatic looks are so easy and so
cute! If you have different versions of the same color in your closet, most likely they would look
great together. Next time you are in your closet, make it easy on yourself and grab whatever is
“blue” or “green” and no doubt you will come out with a put-together look with minimal effort.
For example, an outfit could be medium blue jeans, a light blue top, and a dark blue jacket. To
other people, you will look as if you really know your way around a color wheel. They will never
know that you just literally grabbed whatever was blue and called it a day.
Statements
You’ve probably heard the phrase “statement pieces” mentioned in every fashion
magazine to ever exist. Well, they were not lying. Statement pieces are so important to easy
outfits and easy looks. But, it doesn’t have to be a statement in the sense of “HERE I AM.
MAKING A STATEMENT WITH MY OUTFIT. LOOK AT MY STATEMENT PIECE”
because if you’re like me, that’s what you’ve thought about every time you’ve read it. Statement
pieces don’t need to be bold or outrageous. They could be your favorite jacket that goes well with everything, your favorite sneakers, or even a hat! The ideal statement piece for low-effort
looks is something that is versatile, looks good, and that you like. It’s time to re-evaluate your
closet and find which items you gravitate towards, something that you would enjoy wearing on a
daily. The important part is that you like your statement piece(s) because if you don’t, you
certainly won’t make sure to grab it every time you need a quick fix for a low-effort look.
Outfit idea: All-black outfits with one colorful piece, like a jacket or bag, always steal the show!
Accessories
Accessories! This might be the easiest part of your low-effort looks. Like statement
pieces, accessories with minimal effort should be something that you are able to go with a lot of
different outfits and that you wouldn’t mind seeing every day, because for the most part we take
our accessories with us everywhere. Accessories can be phone cases, masks, backpacks, purses, wallets, lanyards, and more. These are items we always have and don’t pay a lot of attention to. But, if we did, accessories could be utilized for our ultimate low-effort looks. If you are a student, your backpack is a staple item. If you have a really cute backpack, or dare I say
statement backpack, then whatever you are wearing will always be elevated to the next level.
You will always look like a fashion queen, just by remembering to bring your backpack to class.
Let your accessories speak for you! Let them tell the world how much you got it *in the bag*.
